The name "Chandra Sekhar" means lord "Shiva" , and am very happy to have this name,Thanks to my parents for naming me after these great scientist both of whom won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and 1983 respectively coming from the same family tree.

1) Chandra Sekhara Venkata Raman : Was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for the discovery that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength. This phenomenon is now called Raman scattering and is the result of the Raman effect.

Notable awards:

  • Knight Bachelor (1929)
  • Nobel Prize in Physics (1930)
  • Bharat Ratna (1954)
  • Lenin Peace Prize (1957)

2) Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar : Was an Indian-American astrophysicist who, with William A. Fowler, won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics for key discoveries that led to the currently accepted theory on the later evolutionary stages of massive stars. Chandrasekhar was the nephew of Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.

Notable awards:

  • Nobel Prize in Physics (1983)
  • Copley Medal (1984)
  • National Medal of Science (1966)
  • Padma Vibhushan (1968)

My blog got the much needed flavor of physics now after writing about the works of these great scientists. If we observe keenly two of the nobel prize and copley medal awards that the greatest all time Physics Scientist Albert Einstein got were also been given to Subramanyan ChandraSekhar

A glass of water has no colour. But a deep sea with the same water is a brilliant blue. Why is this so?
Most of us answer it 'because of the reflection of the sky'. But Raman proved that it was the water itself that caused blue light to scatter more than other colours in light.

Raman became the first person from Asia to be awarded a Nobel prize in any field of science. The date of the discovery, February 28, is now celebrated as National Science Day in India.

He passed his Std. X when he was just 11 years old. At 15 he had a degree, with gold medals in Physics and English. By the time he was 19 he had an MA.
